We all like the look of being tan but it is not healthy. Summer is here and there are going to be a ton of outdoor promotions coming up. Sunburn is a very uncomfortable and dangerous thing and I want all the models to avoid being burned. Promotional models should carry sunscreen in their purses every day and reapply when working long shifts. Too much sun can cause wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, thinning of the skin, freckles and moles. It can also lead to skin cancer which can be deadly. In the modeling industry the young fresh look is always in, tanning is the number one thing that ages skin. Be careful this summer, wear sunscreen everyday!

The best way for promotional models to get professional pictures is to do some TFP work. TFP means trade for pictures/prints and is a free way to work with great photographers. A lot of our clients want to see a mix of professional and candid pictures and if you don’t have both we can’t submit you. The easiest way to find photographers to do TFP work is from other models or modeling websites such as Model Mayhem. Here are a few tips to guide you through your first photo shoot. It can be a lot of hard work but so much fun at the same time.

  1. Bring someone with you if it is your first time. This is normal and expected.
  2. Go over everything with the photographer before you arrive. You should talk about the images you need and the attire you will be wearing. Maybe you can come up with great themes and ideas together.
  3. Ask about MUA’s. This isn’t always going to be a possibility but it’s nice when you have one. they can give you different looks.
  4. Pack everything you plan on wearing and more. Make sure you have jewelry, shoes, accessories, make up and tons of clothes. Try to avoid solid colors like black and white, they look horrible on film. Pack the day before so you are in no hurry the next day, always be prepared.
  5. Make sure you get a great head shot, and body shot. Every modeling agency will ask for these types of pictures.
  6. Practice your poses and look at magazines to learn a few poses. It is much harder than it looks. Tip: If the pose doesn’t hurt it won’t look good.
  7. Make sure you and the photographer discuss a time limit on when you will receive your photos. This could be 3 days to 3 weeks depending on how busy the photographer is. They will edit a couple for you and maybe charge to edit others.
  8. Show up on time and do not back out. This ruins the photographers schedule and gives you a bad reputation.
  9. Have fun and be creative. This is art and the possibilities are endless.
  10. Check out the photographers work, if you don’t like their work or their style of shooting chances are you won’t get what you want out of the shoot.

These are just a few tips to help you and make your photo shoots a little easier. Have fun!

I found an article today that says that make up can make us look 10 years older! That is bad news to women, especially models because a lot of clients want a young fresh look. Here are a few tips for our promotional models, if you are doing these things stop ASAP!

  1. Watch out for your foundation. If you use too much it will set in any fine lines or wrinkles and make you look 10 years older. Minimize your make up.
  2. Don’t skip eyeliner. Eyeliner can take years off your eyes and hide the imperfections.
  3. If you don’t exfoliate often you will have dull skin. Models need young, glowing skin and can get this by exfoliating at least 3 times a week. This only takes a few minutes and can be done in the shower.
  4. Don’t ever get a straight haircut, layers make you look younger.
  5. Skipping the sunscreen is the worst thing you can do. Almost all wrinkles and fine lines are due to sun exposure.
  6. Frosted/glitter eye shadow. This reflects the light and makes any signs of aging 100 times more visible.
  7. Too much bronzer can make a models face look dull and that adds age. Use bronzer in the places the sun would hit, not everywhere.

Those are a few bad habits to break immediatley for a younger look. Young and fun is the look that most clients request in the modeling industry.

The NRA starts this weekend and I am super excited. This is a great trade show and the models really enjoy working it. The NRA is coming to McCormick Place in Chicago on May 22nd and staying til May 25th. This show is full of  food, drinks, snacks, and anything that you could possibly find in a hotel or restaurant. Of course there will be Pink Avenue Models here as well!  The NRA will take about 2 days to walk through, make sure you come hungry and ready to snack. Over 1,800 companies will be exhibiting this year. Last year there were about 38,000 attendees and they are expecting even more this year. If you have not been to the NRA you have to go, registration is only $80!

Enjoy the show!

Whether you are working a trade show, promotion, liquor promotion, working as a brand ambassador or part of a street team you were probably asked to sign an independent contractor agreement. This agreement can be anywhere from 1-30 pages long and difficult to read. Please take the time to read all of the paperwork that your modeling agency sends you, it will benefit you in the end.

Make sure that you know the consequences of being late or backing out last minute. Some agencies will take a percentage off of your check if you are late, some agencies will take a cut of your check as an agency fee, and almost every modeling agency will penalize you for canceling last minute. The cancellation fee can be $50, it can be that you will not be paid at all if you don’t finish all scheduled hours, and it is almost always guaranteed that you will be banned from the modeling agency. Backing out of an event last minute makes the model look unprofessional, upsets the client and puts the modeling agency in a tough situation. This is why the cancellation penalty is so severe.

Another very important piece of the contract is when your check will be sent. Some agencies pay 30 days, some 45, some 60, and some 10 weeks. Make sure you know when to expect your check. Do not ask when your check will be sent unless it is after the date stated on your model contract.

Make sure you sign and date all of the necessary pages and know what you are getting yourself into. Most contracts will ask for an emergency contact. Have someone that is in the same city as you and put the best number to reach the person. Obviously we don’t expect to ever use this number but we have to have it in case of an accident.

The most important thing on our model contract are our expectations and event details. The event details section will have everything you need to know about your event, time, dates, location, attire, pay rate, contact person. Our expectation section has a list of what we expect from you when you are representing Pink Avenue Models and our clients. Please follow these rules at any of your events.

We pick our models based on experience, personality, looks and so much more. Pink Avenue Models gets submissions every day and not everyone gets added to our team.  Please do not accept a job if you have any intentions of not finishing it. We take our industry very seriously and have fun at the same time, we expect the same from our models.

It’s happened to all of us, we have to work early and sleep in a little too late. In the modeling industry you have to show up to your events presentable. I found an article that will help you look the best in just a few minutes. use these steps to look model ready in half the time.

  1. Use tinted moisturizer. This is great for your skin, and protects you from the sun! Use this instead of foundations, powders and blushes.
  2. Skip the eye make up. Mascara is the only thing you need.
  3. Blow dry your hair from underneath. The top will dry on its own.
  4. Use combo items, cleanser and toner, shampoo and conditioner, body wash with lotion in it. This will cut time in half.
  5. Use headbands or hair pieces to dress up your undone hair.

Those are a few tips to use if you have just a few minutes to get ready. Models are expected to look photo shoot ready at all times so try to use these as a last resort. Make sure you are well rested so you have lots of energy and personality when working your events. Summer is a busy season, are you ready?

The modeling industry is expected to be unique, fun, creative, full of gorgeous people, something that pushes the limits, gets the brand message out there and so much more. It requires fun, beautiful, outgoing, and intelligent models but it also requires a professional attitude. There are so many things that models can do to upset their modeling agency, please do not do these things.

  1. Do not pull a no call no show. If you do this you will never work for our agency again and will be taken off our database.
  2. Cancelling last minute is almost as bad as pulling a no show. Please do not do this unless something really important comes up, it’s hard for us to believe some of the excuses we hear.
  3. Show up on time ready to work. On time in the promotional modeling world means 15 minutes early.
  4. Avoid playing on your phones when working. It’s unprofessional and this isn’t what the client is paying you for.
  5. Never talk negative about the client you are promoting, or their competitors. You always pretend to love the brand you are working for.
  6. Don’t complain while you are working. Yes standing in heels is painful and yes you may be tired but nobody else has to know.
  7. NEVER try and steal the client from the agency. This is against your contract and the clients contract. If you do a great job chances are the client will request you next time. You trying to work directly for the client is unprofessional.
  8. Don’t ignore calls, emails or texts from agencies. This is a red flag. If the agency contacts you should always respond as fast as you can.
  9. Don’t expect to have parking reimbursed, lunches paid for or any other reimbursement. Some clients are nice and offer reimbursement but it’s not guaranteed.
  10. Always remember that you are hired as a model. Promotional models should have hair and make up done no matter what type of event it is… liquor promotions, trade shows, events and promotions all deserve the same amount of getting ready time. Don’t show up with wet or messy hair and no make up, you can be sent home for this.

Please avoid all of these things. Reputation is everything in this industry and you want the best reputation possible.

Heels are painful, any female will admit that but we can not live without them. In the modeling industry heels are a must and they range from 3-12 inches. Models are required to wear heels at trade shows, during liquor promotions, while doing photoshoots, walking the runway, while working promotions and events, and pretty much any other time they leave the house.  I found an article that explains why your whole body hurts after wearing heels for an 8 hour shift and the damage that they can cause.

* Heels change your posture. We are made to stand straight up, when wearing heels our hips and spine are placed out of alignment causing pain because the body curves.

* Heels add pressure, the higher the heel the more pressure that is added.

* Wearing heels so much is bad for your knees as well and can cause osteoarthritis. Heels place force and 26% more pressure on the knees.

* Calf muscles tighten and contract to the angle of the heel. Your calf muscles are always flexing while wearing heels.

* Heels are bad for your toes as well. Narrow shoes can cause bunions, hammer toes, and Morton’s neuroma.

* The achilles tendon is also hurt when wearing heels because it is stretched and shorter than normal.

* Heels can cause a deformity called Haglund’s deformity which is a bone enlargement on the back of the heel. This happens from strappy shoes or heels rubbing on the bone.

* Heels can cause ankle injuries and cause the body to be less balanced.  They can also hurt the ball of the foot because all of the weight is shifted.

Heels look amazing and are a necessity in the modeling industry. Always carry a pair of flats in your purse to change into. These come in handy after a long day of work, crazy night out, or for walking long distance. Take care of your feet and your body!
