The modeling industry is a very unique industry and I love working in it. What I love most is that there are so many different things to do in this industry which gives models more opportunity. If you don’t work in this industry it can be really confusing so I thought today’s blog could explain what this industry is about. Here are a few terms that are used a lot, followed by a definition.

Model –  A person who poses for artists and phptpgraphers and is employed to wear clothing or pose with a product for purposes of display and advertising.

Portfolio/Book – A folder that contains pictures of models with different looks. Models will bring this when going to see a client to show their versatility. The more looks a model can pull of the more work she will get. Now models also have online ports which are easier and cheaper to update.

Runway/Catwalk – This is what high fashion models walk on during a fashion show. Runway models are known to be 5′8” or taller.

Trade show/ Trade show model – An exhibition organized so that companies in a specific industry can showcase and demonstrate their latest products, service, study activities of rivals and examine recent trends and opportunities. A trade show model is hired from a modeling agency to provide general assistance at the booth and attract attendees.

Promotional model/Brand ambassador - A promotional model is a person hired to drive consumer demand for a product, service, brand, or concept by directly interacting with potential consumers. A promotional model can be female or male, and  is intended to be attractive in physical appearance. They serve to provide information about the product or service and make it appealing to consumers. While the length of interaction may be short, the promotional model delivers a live experience that reflects on the product or service he or she is representing.

Modeling agency – An office that clients will contact to hire models for their campaign, fashion show, trade show, event, corporate party etc. Models are sometimes managed by modeling agencies or they can be hired as an independent contractor.

TFP/TFCD – Trade for print/pictures or trade for cd. This is used a lot between photographers and models. They are both giving their time in exchange for images. There is no money involved.

MUA – Make up artist.

Recap form – This is usually a 1 page document that models will submit to their agency after working a promotion. Most commonly used for liquor promotions. The client wants to know how many samples were passed out, what the consumers reaction was, and other details about the event.

Model Mayhem – Also known as MM. This is a free website for models, photographers, muas’s and designers to network on.

I hope this mini dictionary of the modeling industry makes things a little less confusing.

Pink Avenue Models gets a lot of calls from potential models and they always want to know what the requirements are to work with our company. We don’t have height, weight or age requirements but there are a few things that we look for when booking models for our events.

Our perfect promotional model would be:

  1. Beautiful
  2. Fun
  3. Outgoing
  4. Intelligent
  5. Confident
  6. Reliable
  7. Responsible
  8. Honest
  9. Hardworking
  10. Professional

If you have all of these qualities we would  love to work with you! Please submit all of your information on our “Become a Model” page. We look forward to working with you!

One of our models called the other day and asked for some advice. She worked with another modeling agency a few months ago and still hasn’t received payment. This is the worst situation for a model because in this industry some companies pay between 30 days and 10 weeks which is an extremely long time already, so when they are late on payment it can be even longer. It’s not fair because you showed up to work, did a great job and expected to get paid on time.  She asked me what she could do to get paid and I gave her a few tips so she can avoid this from happening again.

  1. Always research the company that you are going to work for. You can google them, ask friends that work in the same industry and even check rip off report. If you read anything bad, I would avoid working with the company.
  2. Always get a contact number from the client you are representing. If the agency isn’t paying you at least you can call the client and tell them. They should know what happened to their money and learn to never work with that agency again.
  3. Make sure you read over the contract especially the payment part. As soon as your check is late start calling and emailing the company. You have the right to ask about your check, it’s your money. Be prepared to hear multiple excuses.
  4. If calling and emailing isn’t getting you any answers it’s time to take legal action. There are companies out there that won’t pay. The client has paid them but they have spent the money else where.  Get phone numbers or emails from others that worked the promotion as well so you guys can team up together if needed.

I hate to write about negative things that happen in this industry but they do happen very often. Just be cautious when working with new companies and do your research. The best way to find great companies to work with is to ask other people at events who they work for.

Pink Avenue Models always blogs about what we expect from our models and how our models should act at an event. A promotion has a lot of people involved and everyone has to do their part to make the promotion a success, this includes the modeling agency, the models, and the client. We expect our models to show up dressed to impress, ready to work and have fun, and to act professional. We also have client expectations, they are all pretty simple and necessary to have the promotion run perfectly. Here is a list of what we expect from our clients:

  1. We expect our clients to provide all the necessary details. This includes dates, times, location, brand, model responsibilities, attire, budget and anything else we need to know. The more information we have the easier it is for us to staff your event.
  2. We expect our clients to select the models they would like to work with in a timely matter. Model’s availability can change any minute which means if you wait a week the model you want may have booked something else.
  3. We expect our clients to sign an agreement as soon as they make their selections. This agreement is between the client and our modeling agency and is required before we can move forward.
  4. We want to build good relationships with all of our clients. In order for this to happen we have to have good communication and trust. We understand that things change and we accept that, just let us know. The models work directly for us and we need to know exactly what is happening.
  5. We expect our clients to pay on time. You have come to us and asked us to provide a service, we have and you need to pay for it. There is a due date on every invoice and we expect payment on that date.

Everyone at Pink Avenue Models loves working in the modeling industy. We have had great clients in the past and are looking forward to future clients. A successful event happens when we all work together. Looking forward to our 2010 events!

I was working an event the other night and a consumer came up to me and said I think you are too small to work in the modeling industry. I was 5′8” with heels on. He told me he worked as a model in the past and that he is used to seeing tall, skinny girls. I then went on to explain that models come in all sizes, heights, weights, ethnicitys and that there are different types of modeling. Let’s just say I definitely won this argument.

I think when people hear the word model they think tall, super skinny, walking on the runway like the Victoria’s Secret Angels. Yes we would all love to be in their position but some of us just are not built that way. Luckily there are other types of modeling such as promotional modeling, print modeling (yes there are short girls in ads), parts modeling and so many others.

So how tall are some of the supermodels we look up to?

Naomi Campbell – 5′9.5”

Heidi Klum – 5′8.5”

Tyra Banks – 5′10”

Cindy Crawford – 5′9.5”

Elle Macpherson – 6′0”

Kate Moss – 5′6”

Marissa Miller – 5′8”

Gisele Bundchen – 5′10.5”

Laetitia Casta – 5′7”

Claudia Schiffer – 5′11”

This proves my point. Even supermodels range in height. I listed 10 models and the height range is between 5′6” and 6′0”. Don’t let anyone ever tell you that you can’t do what you want to do. If you want to model try it, every client is looking for something different. Good luck!
